DLMS Students Qualify for Statewide History Competition

The Deer Lakes Middle School tandem of (pictured on left above) Alyssa Weber and (pictured on right) Isabella Bolduc placed third in the Junior Group Exhibit division at the regional National History Day competition at the Heinz History Center in the Strip District.

This year's theme was Conflict & Compromise in History.  Deer Lakes’ winning exhibit focused on conflict between a group of businessmen and sugar planters in favor of US annexation versus Hawaii's monarchy.  The resultant conflict forced Queen Liliuokalani to abdicate the throne and paved the way for the United States’ annexation and eventual admission of Hawaii as the 50th state in the union.

Third place qualifies the sixth graders for the statewide competition in Harrisburg this month.
