Now in its 14th year, Allegheny County Camp Cadet is a nonprofit, charitable organization funded by contributions from the community, and it is free to attendees. A mini version of a police academy, the camp is designed to produce a better understanding of law-enforcement activities while living in an atmosphere similar to a police training academy. Emphasis is placed on improving self-discipline and building self-esteem and confidence in a positive environment through teamwork, and it provides an opportunity to make new friends.

Staffed by local law enforcement officers, including members of the Pennsylvania State Police, the Allegheny County Police Department, Allegheny County Sheriff’s Office and other local officers who serve as counselors and instructors. Each day begins with physical training, followed by a morning run. Cadets then return to their quarters for personal hygiene and to prepare for an inspection. During the day, activities include presentations by various agencies, a mock crime-scene investigation, a mock trial, and sporting activities.
